British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
