Nearly 25,000 Lost Electricity in South-East Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Severe Storms

Around twenty-five thousand households in south-east Queensland were left without power on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms impacted the region, producing powerful gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Substantial Ice Stones and Widespread Impact

Locals reported giant hailstones reaching sizes of 7cm in certain regions. Weather authorities confirmed that various areas across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were attempting to repair energy supply throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews deployed to address the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Weather Woes

Simultaneously, around one thousand energy customers in the southern state also encountered power outages after Melbourne recorded its wettest day in over 500 days.

State Emergency Services responded to nearly 600 requests for assistance across the state, mostly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

  • Wyndham region - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on the previous day, over 28k electricity consumers in Victoria were without power.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were expected to linger along much of eastern Queensland this coming days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

The following day was predicted as the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent thunderstorm potential expected across multiple regions of both areas.

Health Warning

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, specifically given the current weather patterns.
