A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
